Citation Searching in WOS

Citation searching is using a specific key article on a topic to find other articles that built on the work done in the key article--articles that cite the key article. You can do this in Web of Science.

If you were researching the topic of estrogen and memory and your professor told you that this article was a really good one:

McEwen, B. (2002). Estrogen actions throughout the brain. Recent Progress in Hormone Research, 57, 357-384. https://doi.org/10.1210/rp.57.1.357

You can find articles that build on the work done since this article came out by looking at the articles that cite the main paper.

1. Enter the title of the key article in the search box and change the search box type to Title:

2. To the right of the citation, look for the number of citations:

3. Click on the number to view a list of all the articles that cite this key article. (The citations are displayed with the newest ones first.)

NOTE: If an article is a newly published article it may not yet have any citations associated with it!
