Biology

PubMed is developed and maintained by the U.S. government's National Library of Medicine and is the largest online index to articles in all areas of medicine and human biology and is the most extensive index for microbiology.

IMPORTANT: Even though PubMed is freely accessible to anyone in the world, you must connect to PubMed by using a link from the Knox library's web site. This insures you can properly link out to access full text of articles.

Searching PubMed

1. Go to PubMed - use a link from the library's web site!

2. Click on the Advanced search option

3. Build your search by entering concepts (and synonyms if appropriate) and using the correct operators. See the video (1:30).

TIP: To get a really focused search, limit your search terms to the article title.

Be sure you understand how search operators and phrase searching works in PubMed!

  • Use AND to combine unlike terms and OR to combine synonyms.
