Moral panics, in a nutshell, can be thought of as the media's distorted coverage of events that persuade audiences there is a genuine risk to safety even though there is no real need for concern (paraphrased from media-studies.com/moral-panic/).
Moral Panics are a mechanism through which society works through social anxieties. As such, they are a frequent mechanism through which racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and other systems of oppression are reproduced. Learning to recognize and respond to moral panics as they are happening is an essential skill for any abolitionist or social justice advocate.
