HIST 366: The American Civil Rights Movement

Use Bibliographies

Look at the bibliographies, footnotes and reference lists in the articles, books, and reference sources you have already found!

These will lead you to other relevant sources, both secondary and primary sources. Then, search for the article or book in Knox Primo to see if it is available. Use Tipasa to obtain articles not available in full text in Knox Primo.

America: History & Life Database

America: History & Life is a database focusing on the history and culture of North American places covering prehistory to the present. The database includes citations, from the early 20th century to the present, to articles in history journals and other allied social sciences disciplines as they relate to the study of history. It indexes both peer-reviewed articles and articles from popular history journals.

It is often difficult to tell from the database record if an article is peer-reviewed, but look for two things:

  • the presence of an extensive bibliography (the number of notes)
  • the publication type noted in the record is "academic journal" or you have selected "peer reviewed" on the advanced search screen.

If there is no full text available, click on Access Options, then the Find It link to see if the article is available somewhere else in full text, or to request the article via interlibrary loan.

Other Journal Databases

Other databases that cover scholarly journal literterature that may be relevant for some topics about the CRM are:

  • Political Science Complete -- focuses on scholarly literature for political science and international relations
