Browsing through contemporaneous newspapers and periodicals is good way to get a feel for the issues that were important for communities, and for the nation, during a particular time period. There are several options available to do this online:

The Black Panther newspaper is included in full text in the database Black Thought & Culture.

To limit your results to articles in The Black Panther newspaper:

  1. Go to ADVANCE SEARCH.
  2. type in Black Panther in the TITLE AND SERIES field.
  3. Add any other relevant keywords and search.

An early and long-running African-American magazine is The Crisis, the periodical of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. You can view issues online from 1910-1922 at the Modernist Journals Project site.

Independent Voices

Independent Voices is an open access digital collection of alternative press newspapers, magazines and journals, drawn from the special collections of participating libraries. These periodicals were produced by feminists, dissident GIs, campus radicals, Native Americans, anti-war activists, Black Power advocates, Hispanics, LGBT activists, the extreme right-wing press and alternative literary magazines during the latter half of the 20th century.
