Who uses Chicago?

Chicago is generally used by those in humanities such as History and Fine Arts, as well as the Sciences and Social Sciences.

Features of Chicago

  • Uses title case for source titles, meaning all principle words are capitalized
  • Has two formatting styles: Notes-Bibliography & Author-Date

Two Formats

There are two formats in the Chicago style so be sure to check which version of Chicago your expected to use for your assignment!

  1. Notes-Bibliography (NB)
    1. Uses endnotes or footnotes
    2. Often used in the Humanities
    3. Reference list title: "Bibliography"
  2. Author-Date
    1. In-text parenthetical citations
    2. Often used in Sciences and Social Sciences
    3. Reference list title: "References"
