Library Services for Faculty

How to order books, how to put items on reserve, how to schedule a library workshop for your course and more!

What are Reserves?

Supplementary and required class materials and other documents of interest to the Knox Community can be placed on reserve at each library. These materials are available for checkout at the circulation desks in both libraries. Digital materials like streaming films and ebooks can also be placed on reserve, and it's a good idea to do so because they will appear in reserve lists for courses alongside the physical materials placed on reserve.

How to Place an Item on Reserve?

The best way to place an item on Reserve is to do so from within Knox Primo.

1. Go to Knox Primo and sign in.

2. Search for the item you want to place on reserve. Then, click on the title to display the full record.

3. Look for the link to make a reserve request next to the item information:

4. The Reserve Request form will open in a new window. Fill out the form.

If you cannot access Knox Primo or need to place non-library-owned material on reserve, fill out the reserve request form.

If you have questions about reserves or problems placing items on reserve, contact your librarian liaison

Two Types of Reserves

CLOSED

These materials are stored behind the circulation desks in both libraries and may be checked out with a valid ID. This is the most common type of reserve and is best used for required readings or DVDs.

OPEN

These materials are located on open shelves near the circulation desk in Seymour Library and may not leave the library. Students may browse the collection and use books anywhere in the library. This choice works well when many students may need to browse or consult the same books, but they don't all have a reading do the same day.

Reserves Policies

  • Consider the document Copyright and Fair Use at Knox College when preparing library reserves. All materials on reserve and materials distributed via learning management systems (Moodle, etc.) are subject to these restrictions.
  • Items owned by a faculty member may be placed on reserve at the faculty member's own risk. Please provide full information on how this item will be referenced on your syllabus.
  • Interlibrary Loans, I-Share items, rented materials, textbook review copies, and periodicals MAY NOT be placed on reserve.
  • At term end, all reserve materials not needed during the succeeding term will be removed from reserve.  If they are items from the library's collections, they will be re-shelved. If the items are personally owned by instructors, they will be returned to the instructor.

Reserves Circulation

  • A maximum of 2 reserves can be checked out at one time
  • Reserves may be renewed once.
  • Circulation periods vary (2, 4 and 24 hours)
  • Closed Reserves may leave the building
  • Open reserves must stay in the library
  • Reserves checked out within 2 hours of closing time may be kept overnight until one hour after the library opens the next day.
