Psychological Tests & Measures: A Guide to Finding them

How to locate psychological measures for your projects, and how to locate the primary articles for specific tests and measures.

Basic Method for Finding the Primary Article

Note: Even if the Measure is Full Text in PsycTests, that is not the equivalent to the primary article.  The Primary Article will be a peer reviewed journal article that discusses the development and validation of the measure.

STEP ONE - Find the PsycTests RECORD for the Measure - this is just the information in PsycTests on the measure, not the full text.  You need to try this even if you found the measure you wanted to use in a different way.

  • Open PsycTests

 Opening PsycTests

  • Put the Title of the measure in the search box
  • Change the search type of the box to TitleSearch Example
  • Search

STEP TWO ~ Locating the Citation for the Primary Article

  • Click on the Title of the measure in the results list
  • Look at the Complete record and find the section called "Test Child Records"

Example: If the measure's title was "Religiosity Instrument" you can see below that the primary article title is " Ethnic identity as a predictor of microaggressions toward Blacks, Whites, and Hispanic LGBTs by Blacks, Whites, and Hispanics" and that the rest of the citation information follows that.Primary Article Citation

STEP THREE ~ Finding the Article Listed in PsycInfo

  • Copy the article title onto your computer's clipboard (highlight it and click CTRL-C)
  • Open another Tab
  • Go back to the Library's Home Page, Click on the Databases Tab, and Choose PsycInfo this time
  • Paste the article title in Psyc Info and change the Search Box type to Title
  • This should bring up the article citation

STEP FOUR ~ Accessing the Article in Full Text

  • Check to see if the article is attached in Full Text as a PDF or LINKED FULL TEXT
    • If Yes - then just download, print, or email it
    • If No -
      • Click the FIND IT Button

Find It Button

  • Does it then link to a Full text Option?
    • Yes - then follow the link and download, print or email it
    • No
