This guide is for students enrolled in English 300. It serves as the syllabus for the course.

Step 1: Source Evaluation Rubric

Use this rubric to do your initial evaluation of the source. The notes field is not optional.

(rubric will be added when it has been completed)

Your rubric should be turned in via email BEFORE you do the evaluation assignment.

Step 2: Source Evaluation

You will use the information you gathered in the rubric to help you write an in-depth evaluation of one source. Please include the following items in your evaluation:

  • Complete MLA citation
  • A 4-5 sentence summary of the source's argument and conclusion.
  • A statement on the source's audience and purpose.
  • A statement as to how you will use the source (Use the BEAM method)
  • 2-3 sentences evaluating the source in relation to your research. This is where you would address bias, perspective, strengths, and weaknesses
  • Choose 1-2 quotes from the source that get to the heart of the argument the author is making.

This should not be more than one page double spaced. It should be turned in via email/google doc share.
