Help Me Figure out the Differences between Journals, Transactions, Letters, Proceedings and Magazines!

Adapted from the IEEE FAQ

Journals and Transactions
  • Published technical papers of original work that advances the science
  • May also contain reviews and tutorial papers concerning original work
  • Should be of lasting value to the professional as judged by the authors’ peers through a formal review process

Letters

  • Brief papers, usually three to four pages in length
  • Content similar to journals and transactions

Proceedings

  • Collection of papers presented at a conference, symposium, meeting or workshop
  • Paper presents original research and the author obtains feedback from those attending the conference
  • Papers may be published later as journal articles

Magazines

  • Published more often than journals, proceedings and transactions
  • Contain articles, general news and regular columns
  • May not be peer reviewed (depends)

How to I Get Proceedings?

Papers presented at Conferences (also called "Proceedings") can be requested from Interlibrary Loan (ILL) via ILLiad. See instructions on ordering Proceedings in this guide.
