Popular sources can often be characterized by the following features: 

  • Written by journalists or professional writers for the general public.
  • Does not assume the reader has any prior knowledge.
    • Entry level content
    • Language that is easy to understand
  • Rarely cite sources
    • Fact-checked through the editorial process of the publication they appear in.
  • May contain an argument, opinion, or analysis of an issue.

Examples of Popular Sources

Some common types popular sources that you may use for research are: 

  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Websites
  • Blogs
  • Speeches
  • Interviews

Special interest publications which are not specifically written for an academic audience are also considered "popular" (e.g., National Geographic).
