What is AnthroSource

AnthroSource, developed by the American Anthropological Association (AAA), is the premier research database for anthropologists.
  • It indexes a total of 32 anthropological journals, newsletters, and bulletins.
  • It provides up-to-date full-text articles from 15 AAA peer-reviewed journals (beginning coverage varies).
  • It has hyperlinks to full-text content within JSTOR.

How to Access AnthroSource

  • Start from Knox College Library's Home Page (http://library.knox.edu/)
Access Option 1 Click on “Selecting a journal database: A-Z list”
Select AnthroSource from the list
Access Option 2 Click on “Selecting a journal database: subject list”
Within the box, select Anthropology & Sociology, then AnthroSource
Access Off Campus Click on "Selecting a journal database: A-Z list"
Click the link for AnthroSource
Type in your Knox user name and password

Searching AnthroSource: Basic Search
This is the first search option - the single search box found in the left navigation column throughout the database.
  • Search here for keywords and/or an anthropologist's name
    • Keyword example: search for:
      • Mali
      • Mali and ethnomusicology
    • Name example: search for:
      • Ashley Montagu
      • Ashley Montagu and race

Searching AnthroSource: Advanced Search

Click on the "Advanced Search" hyperlink just below the AnthroSearch button to get more search options.
  • "all of the words"
    • type keywords here to combine topics and narrow your search. Also known as an AND search.
  • "the exact phrase"
    • type keywords here to search them as a phrase.
  • "at least one of the words"
    • type keywords and/or synonyms to broaden your search. Also known as an OR search.
For example: if you are searching for the native or indigenous population’s effect on social change in Bolivia, your search might look like this:

Search Tips
  • Automatic Stemming: AnthroSource automatically includes words with variant endings into your search.
    • For example, a search for anthropology will also search for terms anthropologist, and anthropological.
  • Phrase Searching
    • Put exact phrases in quotation marks in the basic search box. When in advanced search, use “the exact phrase” box (no quotation marks).
