Biographical Notes

:Matthew Chambers (1786-1869) came with the original colonists to Galesburg in 1837 to found the town and Knox College. He served as a trustee of Knox College 1837-1854, 1856-1866. Mathew Chambers was a storekeeper, farmer and local financier. Although committed to Galesburg he operated a store in the more lucrative town of Knoxville until 1840 when he moved his business to the northeast corner of Galesburg's Public Square. The store building had been used as a school and church until 1838 when the first Knox Academy was built.

Scope notes

Records included in this collection include those related to the building of a house in Bridport, Vermont in 1822 with bills for materials and contract with builder. Also records of Matthew Chambers's stores and charges from 1822-1841 including notations of his own expenses in 1834-1835 and his wife, Hannah’s, in 1836. Also included is an inventory of Matthew Chambers's fruit trees in 1837. Many names of early Knoxville and Galesburg settlers are included.
