The Knox College Library offers two ways to borrow materials from other libraries,
I-Share and ILLiad. To choose the best method of delivery, please read about the choices below.
Search the Knox Library Catalog first before requesting materials.
Use I-Share: the fastest method to borrow books from other libraries is the I-Share system. Materials arrive, on average, in 3 days.
If a book is not available in the I-Share catalog, place a request through ILLiad.
Volumes from a multi-volume set are best requested from ILLiad.
Look up the journal title in the E-journals database first. This search will tell you if the full text is available online.
Use ILLiad: articles from journals and newspapers to which Knox does not have a subscription, must be ordered through ILLiad. Materials arrive, on average, in 5-7 days.
Search the Knox Library Catalog first before requesting materials.
Use ILLiad: items such as DVDs, videotapes, audio and microfilm should be requested through ILLiad.

I-Share is an integrated library system that serves as the online catalog for 76 (and counting) member libraries and contains over nine million unique bibliographic records. Knox College faculty, staff and students have the ability to borrow materials (remotely or onsite) from other member libraries using a valid Knox ID card.
I-Share can be used to request books owned by other I-Share libraries. Journal articles and non-print materials should be requested via ILLiad.
Items are requested through the I-Share library catalog.
Download pdf instructions.
The back of your Knox College ID card has a barcode number. Use this number, excluding the first and last letters.
Faculty, staff and students of Knox College with a valid Knox ID card may borrow via I-Share. Patrons with library circulation blocks may be prevented from accessing their I-Share account and should contact the Circulation Desk (309-341-7246) for more information.
I-Share requests arrive, on average, in three days, transported via a state-wide delivery system Monday - Friday.
An email will be sent to your Knox email address when circulation notices are generated in the early morning hours each day. You may check the status of your library account, and any requests you have made, by logging into your account through the Knox College Library catalog (see directions below and here).
The I-Share resource sharing service is free!
Due dates for I-Share items are determined by the lending library's circulation policies, as are renewals. When you check out I-Share materials at the circulation desk, please note the due date as it will most likely differ from Knox College Library material due dates.
To renew I-Share items, log into your account via the Knox College Library catalog (see instructions above and here). Select the items to renew, click Renew Selected Items button, and the due date will either immediately update or you will immediately be notified that the item cannot be renewed.
If you have a complete citation, you may request the item via ILLiad, and the library will request it from a much larger pool of libraries. If you need assistance in identifying research materials, please contact the Seymour Library Reference Desk (x7228) or contact a Reference Librarian for assistance.
It is recommended to request volumes from set via ILLiad, not I-Share. Please make a note about volumes needed in the request's note field.
No, actual items borrowed from other libraries, such as books or films, cannot be placed on reserve. Faculty may put personal copies of items on reserve, or they can contact the library about purchasing the item for the collection. Rush ordering and processing is available for most items if needed.
You may contact the Reference Desk 341-7228 or Anne Giffey. After 10 pm you may contact the Circulation Desk 341-7246. A help page is available here.

ILLiad is software that allows Knox College faculty, staff and students to request materials from thousands of libraries in the United States (and around the world).
The first time you use ILLiad you need to create your account. Click First Time Users and fill in the form. Once you log in, select the type of request: article, book or audio-visual material. Fill in the request form completely. You may also use the SFX link resolver, also known as the Find It! button to request journal articles while searching Knox subscription databases. Using this button will lead you to the full text, if we have access, or will allow you to automatically populate an ILLiad request with the citation information, saving you typing time.
Doctoral, masters and undergraduate theses are not available via interlibrary loan and, for the most part, (as unpublished documents) they are not appropriate sources for undergraduate research. This is particularly true of undergraduate and masters level theses. Appropriate sources, such as peer reviewed journal articles, can be found using journal indexes and databases. If you need assistance with research, please call the Seymour Library Reference Desk (x7228) or contact a Reference Librarian for assistance.
Textbooks and other materials assigned for class that are available for sale in the Knox College Bookstore are NOT available via interlibrary loan. Students needing financial assistance to purchase class materials may contact the Dean of Students office. Some texts may be available in the Knox College Library collection or the Galesburg Public Library, where students may apply for a lending card. If you have questions, please contact the Seymour Library Reference Desk (x7228) or contact a Reference Librarian for assistance.
Knox's interlibrary loan service may be used to request books and periodical articles for personal use. All audio-visual materials (DVDs, CDs, videotapes, etc.) requested through interlibrary loan must support work associated with a current Knox course or research being done in connection with a Knox academic program.
To request a renewal
The fine rate is $1.00 per day. Fines start accruing on the day after the due date noted on the interlibrary loan wrapper that comes with the item. If you submit a renewal request, fines stop at that time. (If it is already overdue you will be fined up to the day of the renewal request.) If the renewal request is denied, you will be given 24 hours to return the item and after that, fines will begin again.

Films obtained via interlibrary loan can, in some cases, be used for classroom showings, but interlibrary loan should not be the primary method for obtaining films for this purpose. Faculty wishing to obtain films for classroom showings should contact the library to look first into options for purchasing or renting films. Films obtained via interlibrary loan cannot be used for group showings that are not connected to the academic program. Contact Sharon Clayton or another librarian about purchase or rental options.
On the ILLiad logon page there is a password reminder link (Forgot password?) just below the login boxes. Click this link and provide your ILLiad username, then click the 'reset password' button. The password reset information will be sent to the email address you provided when you first set up your ILLiad account. Check your email for this message and follow the steps in the message to complete the password reset process.
If you do not have enough information to fill in the ILLiad request form, please contact a Reference Librarian for assistance. Please do not submit incomplete requests. Required ILLiad fields are indicated on the request forms. Provide the full titles of journals; do not use abbreviations. Include your source of reference: In what database, book, index, article, or from what person did you find out about the book or article that you are requesting? With a source of reference the Reference staff can verify the citation if information is unclear or incomplete.
The ISSN is an 8 digit number that uniquely identifies a particular magazine or journal. The ISBN is a 10 or 13 digit number that uniquely identifies a particular book. The OCLC Accession number is found at the end of a WorldCat record. These are not required fields, but do speed up processing of requests if they are included.
