Biographical Notes: Hobart R. Gay (1894-1983), born in Rockport, IL, was graduated from Knox College in 1917, after which he began his military career. By 1940 he had served in the U.S. Army in New Mexico, Texas, the Canal Zone, and Washington, DC. In 1942 he began a series of chief of staff appointments to units in Africa and Europe. After service in Japan, Korea and the United States, Gay retired in 1955 as the Commanding General, Anti-aircraft and Guided Missile Center, Fort Bliss, Texas. General Gay was highly decorated and his distinguished military career began in the cavalry and spanned nearly forty years.
