Biographical Notes: Gerald H. Cowles (1913-2001) was born in Woodhull, Illinois. He was a local historian, a poet, and a Trappist monk for more than twenty years, serving many years as the cantor at the New Mellray Abbey (Dubuque, IA). GHC was a then a bookkeeper in Woodhull, Henry County, Illinois, and later worked on a horse ranch in Ocala, Florida. The Cowles family has a connection to the Woodhull family.
Scope Notes: Collection is primarily copies of documents and maps and of newspaper pages pertaining to Woodhull, IL area and its founders. Many items marked "Woodhull Archives 1952" were probably gathered by GHC for the serialized history "Stars Above the Saukenuk," which appeared in the Woodhull Dispatch from 1956-1962. The column was collected and printed in book form in 1982 for Woodhull's quasquicentennial. (Stars Above the Saukenuk, Gerald H. Cowles, privately published, 1982.
