Biographical Notes: The Reverend Van D. Covington (1853-1969) was a resident of Galesburg and pastor of the Allen Chapel - African Methodist Church in Galesburg, IL until shortly before his death in 1969.
Scope Notes: Items pertain to the history of the African-Americans in Galesburg, Illinois, and include the original history of the African Methodist Church written in 1916 and an exact typescript of it. Other documents refer to Carver Community Center and Allen Chapel (AME Church, Galesburg). Also included are various news clippings related to blacks in Galesburg and elsewhere, as well as one issue of Illinois Star (November 1941), a Galesburg newspaper printed published by African-Americans.
