Biographical Notes: M. S. Bebb (1833-1895) is the author of several publications on North American plants listed in The National Union Catalogue, Vol. 42, pp. 39-40. Willows were his special interest as indicated in these letters as well.
H. N. Patterson (1853-1919) took over the Oquawka Spectator which he and his wife, Florence, published after his father, Edwin (E. H. N.) Patterson moved to Denver in 1875 [Rivers, Railways and Roads by Robert P. Sutton, p. 86]. (E.H.N. Patterson along with Eugene Field attempted to have Edgar Allen Poe move to Oquawka. See: MSS # 191) The National Union Catalogue, vol. 445, pp. 116-117 lists several titles on North American plants written by H. N. Patterson. The letters in this collection indicate he had his own herbarium, exchanged plants and information with Bebb and printed labels for Bebb.
