William Pickens (1881-1954) was a well-known educator and advocate for civil rights. The year William Pickens spoke in Galesburg, he was also the major orator at the NAACP's national convention. His book, The New Negro was published the next year, followed by Bursting Bonds, Heir of Slaves in 1923.
