H. Murray and Elisabeth B. Baylor Papers Manuscript Collection

Biographical Notes: Elisabeth B. Baylor received her B.A. from Auguastana College, her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. She taught French language and literature at Knox College from 1950-1951, 1957-58, 1960-1970. She was the author of a libretto for the light opera, By Gemini composed by her husband, Murray Baylor and preformed at Knox, March 2-5, 1949.

Murray Baylor (1913-1992) received his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He was a member of the Knox College faculty from 1942 to 1981. He composed chamber music and songs, performed as a pianist. He edited piano music for Alfred Publishing Co. among them works by Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, Schubert and Satie. Professor Baylor taught popular interdisciplinary courses in the humanities at Knox and chaired the Music Department for many years, greatly influencing its development.

Scope Notes: This collection consists of biographical information of both Elisabeth B. Murray and H. Murray Baylor, as well as miscellaneous photographs and newspaper clippings. Also included are correspondence and publishing details related to By Gemini and other works. Audio tapes in the collection include By Gemini, Knox College Convocation - 1979, Poulenc, Concerto in D Minor, and Freshman Preceptorial (1979).
