German: Finding Articles

Use this guide to research German literature, language and culture

Databases

Databases are resources that provide citations and abstracts of journal articles and other scholarly materials. The listing below represents the subject-specific and general databases most relevant to German literature and culture available at Knox.

Depending on your topic, you may consider searching other subject-specific databases as well. To find other databases, use the library's Databases by Subject list.

NOTE: Databases marked with * are provided by the vendor EBSCOhost and can be searched simultaneously. See this quick guide on using EBSCOhost databases.

MLA Bibliography Tips

MLA Bibliography is the premier database for conducting literary research.

A. To search for criticism on the work of a specific author:

  • Enter the author name into the first search box
  • Select "SA Primary Subject Author" from the drop down menu
  • Apply any limits you'd like to set, and the hit Search
    MLA Primary Subject Author search

B. Search for the name of the author as subject to include results in which the author may not be the primary subject author (e.g., the article covers the work of multiple authors).

C. If the author you're working with goes by multiple names and you're not sure which one to use, try using the database's Names as Subjects list. This list lets you search for an author and will tell you the form that is used in the database.
